I’ve struggled with my skin since puberty. Like most teenagers, I had acne, mostly around my T-zone, and it knocked my confidence early. My mum used to tell me I’d grow out of it. I didn’t. The breakouts followed me into adulthood, and at 36, I still get flare-ups.
What changed wasn’t my skin magically fixing itself or products promising perfect skin. It was me.
In my twenties, the acne calmed down slightly, but hyperpigmentation took its place. Dark patches lingered long after spots healed, and on my skin, they were hard to ignore. I didn’t feel comfortable leaving the house without makeup. I spent years and a lot of money trying to fix it quietly, hoping no one would notice how much it affected me.
Eventually, I stopped pretending skincare was just a vanity issue. It wasn’t. It was about control. About wanting to feel at ease in my own face.
What is a herbal peel?
A Herbal peel, also known as a ‘Green Peel’ is a natural, medically developed skin treatment that uses a mix of potent herbs to deeply renew the skin. It targets concerns like acne, scarring, pigmentation, and uneven texture, all without chemicals.
According to Fresh Face London it’s suitable for all skin tones and can be tailored to your skin’s specific needs. The herbs are massaged into the skin and penetrate deep, supporting your body’s natural detox process while stimulating cell renewal and reducing inflammation.
The herbs cause the skin to peel, revealing a fresh, radiant layer of new skin underneath.
Why I chose a herbal peel
I initially planned to book a chemical peel and even scheduled a consultation. Before going ahead, a friend mentioned a herbal peel, something I hadn’t heard of at the time. I went home, researched it, and cancelled the chemical peel.
What appealed to me was the idea of working with my skin rather than stripping it back aggressively. The treatment uses a blend of herbs massaged into the skin to trigger renewal naturally, without acids or harsh chemicals.
The Consultation
Before I could book the treatment, I had a consultation with the lead skin specialist. She assessed my skin, carried out a patch test, asked about the current products I used on my face, and discussed my skin goals. It didn’t feel like a quick, tick-box appointment; she gave me personalised recommendations and explained how to care for “my new skin” properly after the peel.
She suggested a series of three herbal peel sessions, spaced two weeks apart, using the 2g strength peel.
The Treatment
The appointment started with a double cleanse and toner to prep my face. Then came the part I dreaded, extractions. The specialist used a tiny needle to remove spots, even ones I hadn’t noticed. Honestly? I found this part a little painful and uncomfortable. That said, pain thresholds vary, and some of my friends who’ve had a herbal peel didn’t mind this step at all.
Next came the herbal peel itself. The blend of herbs was massaged into my face for around four minutes. It stung and felt prickly, not unbearable, but definitely uncomfortable. I kept reminding myself that the results would be worth it (see video below).
Afterwards, she applied wet cotton bandages to cool my skin down. Once they were removed, I was given an aftercare package, including toner and cream, along with clear instructions on how to use them.
The Peel
In the days that followed, my skin felt tight, sore, and sensitive. By the third day, peeling began properly. It wasn’t subtle. I planned my week around it and avoided mirrors (and people) where I could.
By the second session, the process felt less shocking. The peeling came faster, and underneath it, my skin already looked calmer. By the third, the changes felt cumulative; my hyperpigmentation had softened, my texture was more even, and my skin looked healthier overall.

After
By the end of the treatment course, my skin was clearer, brighter, and more even than it had been in years. My hyperpigmentation had faded significantly, my texture felt smoother, and breakouts were a lot less frequent than before.
For the first time in a long time, I felt comfortable leaving the house without makeup, because I didn’t feel the need for it. When I did wear makeup, it sat better on my face and looked more like a choice than a cover.
I still pay attention to my skin. I still take care of it. But I’m no longer fighting it. The difference is confidence rooted in results. It’s also comforting to know that I have a go-to process that actually works for times when my skin needs extra care.

Things you should know
A herbal peel can be transformative for your skin, but there are a few key things you should know before booking your treatment to ensure the best results and a smooth experience:
Prepare for downtime
Your skin will peel heavily for a few days after each herbal peel session. If you have work meetings, social events, or trips planned, try to schedule your peel during a quieter period.
I work from home a lot, so I continued to work, but I booked my peel nearer the end of the week and avoided scheduling any meetings. I also didn’t allow visitors during the downtime; I didn’t want anyone to see my face peeling. As you can see from the pictures, it isn’t a pretty sight!
Protect your skin
After each session, your skin specialist will provide a toner and SPF. The toner soothes and hydrates, while the SPF protects your new, sensitive skin from sun damage. Applying these consistently is crucial to avoid irritation and ensure optimal results.
It can be painful
I want to be honest; a herbal peel can hurt. The herbs are scrubbed into your face quite firmly, and afterwards, it can feel prickly and sore. I also found the extractions part uncomfortable and painful.
That said, the intensity varies from person to person. Some areas may feel more sensitive than others, and everyone experiences it differently (like me, I found certain parts quite intense!).
Knowing this beforehand helps set realistic expectations and mentally prepare for the process. Remember, the discomfort is temporary, and the results are absolutely worth it!
Multiple sessions are usually needed
Most treatments require a series of sessions (my specialist recommended three, spaced two weeks apart) for the best results. This ensures gradual skin renewal and helps address issues like hyperpigmentation, uneven texture, and minor scarring.
Prep your skin
I was informed to avoid harsh exfoliants, retinol, or strong acids a week before my peel. Your specialist may also recommend certain products to prep your skin. Following these guidelines ensures the peel works effectively and reduces the risk of irritation.
Pricing
The cost of a herbal peel can vary depending on where you have it done, the clinic or spa, and the strength of the peel required for your skin. For me, each session cost £210, but it’s important to note that prices may be higher or lower depending on location and treatment specifics.
Before the treatment, I also paid £50 for a consultation. This might feel like an extra expense, but the consultation was vital and it allowed the specialist to assess my skin, determine the right peel strength, and provide personalised recommendations. In my case, the consultation fee was deducted from the cost of the first peel, so it wasn’t an additional cost in the end.
Overall, I feel it was quite expensive considering I needed 3 sessions initially; however, the money was worth every penny. The results, smoother texture, reduced hyperpigmentation, and increased confidence made the investment feel completely justified.
