Going to dinner with friends or colleagues?
Sharing bills with flatmates and trying to work out who owes what?
Are you and your partner going halves on expenses, or are you planning a big group trip?
Splitting bills or expenses should be an extreme sport. Back when I used to flatshare, splitting bills caused arguments between myself and my flatmate because we’d both end up with two completely different amounts for who owed what and both insisted we had done the right calculations!
Meals out can be a nightmare too, as we anxiously wait for the bill to come and savagely try to work out who ate what. We can be left feeling embarrassed when everyone has settled up, but somehow there is still an outstanding balance and no one can work out what has gone wrong.
Well, the days of embarrassment and fallouts are over because technology has made splitting bills so much easier so we no longer have to waste our precious time and stress ourselves out trying to figure out who owes what!
Below are 6 apps that will help you when splitting bills!
1. Tricount
They say Tricount is perfect for couples, travellers and roommates! It’s pretty simple to use and an excellent way to track group expenses!
It is available on Android and IOS and is free to download. The app also synchronizes data so information stored on the app is backed up, this way you won’t lose any vital expenditure!
Tricount allows individual participants to add their email addresses and phone numbers, so they can also keep track of expenditures and add their own expenses.
The great thing about this app, is it allows you to take pictures too, which proves useful for evidencing receipts or menus detailing the costs.
You can rely on this app to pay any monies owed in the most efficient way possible, for example, if there is a large group of you, you won’t have to transfer money to multiple people!
2. Splitwise

The great thing about this app is that it also allows you to send money through Venmo or PayPal directly through the app for ease, although it’s worth noting that you have to be in a supported country to do so!
‘Plates’ is a secondary app by Splitwise, and only available for IOS users, however, it will be available for Android users at some point in the future. It is designed to focus on meals out and promises to be the ‘perfect tool for handling complex dinner bills’ – sounds like the perfect solution to the drama of having to add up who’s had what at the dinner table!
