Lately, I’ve been in a season where looking after myself and looking pretty still matter to me, but saving money is also a huge priority. Because I’m working toward my first mortgage, I’ve had to shift into more of a ‘beauty on a budget’ mindset, finding affordable ways to feel feminine, confident and put together without overspending.
What I’ve realised is that you don’t need luxury products, regular salon appointments, or a huge budget to look (and feel) beautiful. The truth is, most of the things that make a woman glow are simple, affordable, and sometimes, completely free. It’s the daily habits, the way you carry yourself, and the little self-care rituals that make the biggest difference.
So today, after committing a couple of months ago to stop buying expensive skin care and beauty products, I want to share the exact things I’ve been doing to still look pretty on a budget, the beauty hacks, the soft-life habits, the small routines and mindset shifts that help me still feel like “that girl,” even while I’m being responsible with money. If you’re trying to save, elevate yourself, or glow up without overspending, this is for you!
1. From eyelash extensions to cluster lashes
One of the biggest changes I made while trying to keep my beauty routine on a budget was swapping my salon eyelash extensions for DIY cluster lashes. I used to spend so much money every few weeks on infills, and honestly… it adds up fast. Cluster lashes give you the same look you are going for (depending on which ones you get) without the expense of having them done.
Now, don’t get me wrong, it took me a couple of weeks to get the hang of putting them on, but it just takes practice and persistence! – Trust me, don’t give up, think about the money you will save!
They’re affordable, easy to apply once you get used to them, and they still make you feel put together, especially on days when you want a little extra femininity without the price tag. I don’t think I could go back to getting them done now!

2. Swapping Acrylics for press-on nails
Another budget beauty swap I made was switching from acrylic nails to press-ons and honestly, it’s been life-changing. I used to spend £25–£45 every few weeks on acrylics, and it just didn’t make sense when I’m trying to save for a mortgage. Press-on nails have come a long way… they look just as pretty, they’re easy to change depending on your mood, and you can find gorgeous sets for the price of a coffee. With a bit of nail glue and cuticle oil, they last surprisingly well. It’s one of those swaps that still lets you feel feminine and put together without the salon price tag. One thing I will say though, is be sure to keep glue in your bag incase one comes loose or off while you are out! They genuinely last, but just for emergencies 😉
3. Ditching high-end makeup
One of the biggest beauty myths is that you need designer makeup and high-end brands to look good, when that’s simply not true. Some of the best products on the market come from affordable, high street brands like e.l.f and NYX, and they often perform just as well as luxury alternatives. From flawless foundations to long-lasting lip products, budget-friendly makeup has come a long way. Choosing affordable options means you can build a full routine without breaking the bank and still feel confident, put together, and glowing. 4. Using rice water hair treatments
Rice water has become one of my favourite beauty-on-a-budget hacks, especially for hair. Instead of spending money on expensive masks or salon treatments, I started using rice water to strengthen and soften my hair, and it honestly works. It’s rich in vitamins and amino acids, helps with breakage, and makes your hair feel smoother over time. The best part is It costs literally nothing to make. Everyone has rice in the cupboard, so just soak rice in water, strain it, let it ferment for 24–48 hours, and use it as a rinse after shampooing. It’s a simple, affordable treatment that feels like self-care, smells clean, and makes your hair look healthier without any extra spending.
5. Pilates at home
So since I am trying to save as much money as possible, I had to make the very hard decision to stop going to pilates, this one was difficult, as I loved my Pilates classes, but I just couldn’t justify spending the money on it! Since then, I’ve been doing Pilates at home, and it’s become one of my favourite parts of the day. I roll out my mat, put on a soft playlist, and a online free Pilates class. Doing Pilates at home has helped me stay consistent because I don’t need a gym membership, equipment, or a long routine. A simple 10–15 minutes in my bedroom is enough to lift my mood and make me feel more confident in my body.

5. Homemade face masks
As a girly who struggles with break out and hyperpigmentation, one of my favourite beauty-on-a-budget habits has been making my own skincare masks at home. They’re so simple, cost almost nothing, and honestly feel more luxurious than half the store-bought ones. I love using natural ingredients like honey, yoghurt, turmeric and oats, things you usually have in your kitchen anyway. A little honey and yoghurt gives you a brightening, hydrating mask; turmeric and aloe calm breakouts; and oats mixed with warm water make the softest, most soothing mask for sensitive skin. There’s something really comforting about creating your own little self-care ritual from scratch.
