Braids have always been a staple hairstyle for many Black women, and there are so many beautiful variations of the style, from intricate goddess braids to box braids and many other detailed or simple braided looks. While I love seeing all the different styles people create, I’ve always been drawn to chunky braid styles. I personally feel they don’t get shown as much love, but for me, there’s something about a thicker braid that looks so simple, but yet so beautiful.
Plus, if I’m being honest, I’m a little impatient and don’t fancy spending hours sitting in a salon chair. I prefer something that can be done fairly quickly and taken out just as easily, so for me chunky braids are a win-win.
On a recent visit to the hairdresser, my stylist finished my hair with chunky braids that I ended up loving far more than I expected. In fact, I think it might be my best style yet. I received so many compliments while wearing it that I knew it was a look worth sharing. You can thank me later!
Why I love Chunky Braids
One of the main reasons I love chunky braids is how low-maintenance they are, whilst still looking stunning. I also love how it gives volume. Because the braid itself is thicker, it creates a fuller, more eye-catching look without needing lots of intricate detail.
“Chunky braids can be a healthier option, as thicker braids are less likely to put pressure on your scalp, hair follicles and hairline.”
Another big plus for me is how practical they are. Chunky braids don’t usually require the long hours in the salon chair that some other braided styles do, which makes them a great option if you want something beautiful without the time commitment. They’re also easy to remove when you’re ready for a change, and they are often a lot cheaper, which is something I always appreciate, especially when money is tight!
Downsides are that it doesn’t last as long as smaller braids, so if you are looking for a style that will last many weeks or even months, unfortunately, it won’t be the best style to go for.
Overall, chunky braid styles can be just as beautiful and elegant. They stand out, they’re flattering, and they’re a great choice if you want ease but something that will still turn heads!

The Style my Hairdresser created
I paid £60 for the style, and it took around 1.5 hours to complete. It was roughly 1 hour of braiding time, then half an hour under the dryer for it to set. I used pre-stitched expression hair for the braids, and the braids themselves give a more butterfly effect to give the appearance of a fuller effect.
The curly hair hanging from the braids was synthetic, I wouldn’t use synthetic hair again and next time as after a few days the hair began to tangle and became frizzy. I will use human hair when I get this style again in the future.
I took the braids out after 10 days; however, they may last up to 2 weeks, depending on how well you look after them. This goes without saying, but be sure to keep them covered when you go to bed and when you are lying down.
This style became one of my best styles to date, and I received so many compliments, even from strangers! Sometimes, the easiest styles end up being the most beautiful, and I will definitely be asking for this again!
